Justice Gertner is known for her career defending women’s rights, civil liberties, and universal justice. Justice Gertner was appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton and served on the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts from 1994 until she retired to teach at Harvard Law School in 2011.
